Edibles 101: Dosing, Onset & How to Start Low and Go Slow

Edibles are one of the most popular ways Arkansas patients use medical cannabis—and also one of the easiest ways to overdo it if you don’t know what to expect.

This guide covers how edibles work, how long they take to kick in, and how to “start low and go slow” so your experience is more predictable and less “oops.”

For a big-picture overview of all product types, see Medical Marijuana 101: Product Types.

What counts as an “edible”?

On the Arkansas’ Finest menus, edibles usually show up as:

  • Gummies

  • Chocolates

  • Baked goods (where available)

  • Sometimes capsules/softgels are grouped similarly

Each product will have:

  • Total mg THC (and sometimes CBD) per package

  • Mg THC per piece / serving

  • Flavor, brand, and other ingredients

Always read the label. Different packages can have very different strengths.

Onset: edibles take longer than you think

Unlike inhaled cannabis, which you feel quickly, edibles:

  • Typically take 30–90 minutes to kick in

  • Can take even longer depending on your metabolism and whether you ate recently

  • Often last several hours

That’s why the classic advice is:

Take a low dose, then wait and see how you feel before taking more.

Dosing basics: what does “low and slow” actually mean?

This is not medical advice, but in general:

  • Many new or sensitive patients start with 2.5–5 mg THC

  • Some experienced patients are comfortable at 10 mg THC or more per serving—but that doesn’t mean you should start there

Things that can affect how edibles feel:

  • Your body weight and metabolism

  • Whether you’ve eaten

  • Your tolerance and how often you use cannabis

  • Whether the edible also contains CBD or other cannabinoids

If you’re not sure where to start, talk with your doctor and your pharmacist, and let your budtender know you are new to edibles and want to stay on the lighter side.

How to avoid the classic edible mistakes

A few easy ways to keep yourself out of trouble:

  • Don’t stack doses too quickly.
Take one serving, then wait at least 2 hours before deciding to take more.

  • Don’t mix high-dose edibles with heavy alcohol.
They can amplify each other in uncomfortable ways.

  • Don’t chase someone else’s dose.
Your friend’s perfect dose might be way too much for you.

  • Respect the total package.
If the label says 100 mg THC per bag with 10 pieces, that’s 10 mg each—not a single 100 mg serving.

Budget tips: making edibles last

Edibles can be a cost-effective format if you use them intentionally. Our Stretching Your Cannabis Budget post has full details, but a few edible-specific ideas:

  • Split higher-mg pieces into halves or quarters if they’re scored and the texture allows it.

  • Use your Compassionate Care discount and The Collective Club (Bud Bucks) on eligible purchases—see Loyalty & Discounts → The Collective Club for how it works.

  • Watch for edibles-focused weekly specials at your local Arkansas’ Finest location.
